Chip and Joanna Gaines sat down with CBS Sunday Morning for an exclusive interview. But with all cameras on them, the Gaines turned the spotlight on someone else.
I’ve always assumed it to be true, but now we know for certain: Chip and Joanna Gaines are Christians. And if you meet them in person, you’ll quickly realize that they’re unashamed to tell you so.
Once again, the dynamic duo reminded the world that they care nothing for fame or fortune. Instead, Chip and Joanna Gaines desire to be faithful with what they’ve been given on this side of eternity as they follow hard after Christ.
In a world consumed with greed and obsessed with success, Chip and Joanna Gaines set a different example. Together, they remind the world that there is another way. The Gaines are a beautiful picture of what happens when you live to give, instead of receive.
Chip and Joanna Gaines have renovated hundreds of homes in Texas and are widely renowned for their unashamed faith in Christ, love for their family, and generosity.
Hand-in-hand, the dynamic duo has built an empire from the ground up — all the while, giving glory to God. They recently shared that their primary goal in life is to keep Christ first and foremost in their lives.
The Gaines shared, “Our family has made a commitment to put Christ first, a lifestyle our parents modeled for us very well. They showed us how to keep our marriage and family centered around God.
As for ‘Fixer Upper,’ we have been surprised at the impact of our faith through the show. We haven’t been overtly evangelical, but the rich feedback we have received on family and love all source from our faith. Jesus said the world would know His disciples by their love for one another, and we’ve glimpsed this in practice and strive for it every day.”
If you clicked on this article hoping to dig up some dirt on Chip and Joanna Gaines, I’m so sorry to disappoint you. Time after time, the Gaines have proven to be good-hearted and genuine folks, through and through.
And it’s safe to say that Chip and Joanna are the most loved couple on the planet. And after watching their exclusive interview with CBS Sunday Morning, it’s pretty clear to see why.
5 Reasons Why Chip And Joanna Gaines Are Changing America:
1. Despite their unparalleled success, the Gaines remain humble.
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.” 1 Peter 5:6
On any given week, their “little” Magnolia Market welcomes a staggering average of 25,000 people excited to catch a glimpse of some ‘Fixer Upper‘ magic.
Additionally, Magnolia Homes has remodeled well over 100 houses and counting with Joanna as lead designer and Chip making his wife’s vision a reality by overseeing the construction.
Dubbed the “Best Real-Life Couple on TV” by Vogue, America has watched in admiration as Fixer Upper‘s dynamic duo redefines what wholesome entertaining and quality television looks like.
But as many Magnolia clients have revealed, upon meeting Chip and Joanna Gaines for the first time, you’ll quickly realize that they don’t let success go to their heads. Instead, the Gaines are as humble as they come.
The Gaines are big believers of the simple life. They aren’t consumed with fame, fortune, or being flashy. Known for their laid-back fashion, real-life humor and modest lifestyle, Chip and Joanna take every opportunity to give all credit to God.
Joanna shared, “Whether you’re staying home and raising beautiful babies or you’re the CEO of a multi-million dollar company, let God speak into your life. Let His father heart come and say, ‘This is what I have for you.’ I think that’s the key – not believing the lies, fixing our eyes on Jesus, and walking in the truth.”
2. In a world consumed with fame and fortune, the Gaines have their priorities in order.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.” Matthew 6:19
Instead of buying fancy cars, million-dollar homes and luxurious fashion labels, the Gaines invest in their family.
Deep in the heart of Waco, Texas, Chip and Joanna live a simple life in a simple, 113-year-old farmhouse — and they don’t own a single television set!
The Gaines purchased the modest 1,700-square-foot Victorian home in 2012 — which of course, they remodeled themselves.
In addition to raising their four little ones (Drake, 10, Ella, 9, Duke, 7, and Emmie, 6), the Gaines keep busy with several goats, chickens, horses, and Texas longhorn cattle across their 40-acre farm.
The Gaines love living ‘the farm life’ and cherish spending quality time with their beautiful little family.
Earlier this week, the Gaines went ‘live’ on Facebook to answer some of their most asked questions. The dynamic duo revealed that their children are their biggest source of inspiration.
Despite their busy schedules, Chip and Joanna make family time a priority.
Joanna shared, “I have had to find creative ways to connect with the kids during the day now that I work, to let them know I am always thinking of them. I’ll send them a little note in their lunchbox or surprise them and pick them up early from school for a fun date.”
Let’s be honest: we live in a world full of parents obsessed with climbing the ladder of success, while their children are left to fend for themselves through life.
But Chip and Joanna remind America that family matters.
The Gaines are a beautiful picture of what parenthood should be as they raise their children the godly way.
Joanna shared, “The young stage my kids are in is the sweetest. Chip and I are their favorite people and they still stop what they’re doing to greet us at the door when we get home. I really want to savor this season for as long as I can. When I get home from work I try and leave my phone in the car and make that intentional effort to play and connect face-to-face with them.”
Joanna is passionate about reminding mothers to cherish every season of motherhood.
Joanna shared, “Even when I’m tired at the end of a long day, it’s fuel to see the look in their eyes when I ask them to cook with me or go play outside. As a mom, sometimes I have to change my mindset and remind myself what’s important. I only have so many hours a day to spend with these sweet, little people. And they won’t be little forever. So I get up and keep moving.”
3. The Gaines live to give, instead of receive.
“…It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35
Chip and Joanna are known for a lot of things, but being ‘self promoters’ isn’t one of them. They’re always quick to encourage others and give credit where credit is due.
You may recognize Clint Harp and his wife, Kelly, from their frequent appearances alongside Chip and Jojo on Fixer Upper.
Like the Gaines, the Harps also own a successful little store in Waco, called Harp Design Co., which is a mix of furniture Clint has made and home decor goods that Kelly’s curated.
Together, the Harps build everything from candlesticks to 20-foot custom tables — and business is booming. But it hasn’t always been that way.
In 2011, Clint quit his successful medical sales job and relocated to Waco, Texas, to pursue building furniture full-time. Kelly had a small children’s clothing line, but that wasn’t enough to pay the bills.
Clint shared, “I wanted to do something that meant something to me and my wife. I wanted to wake up in the morning and feel like we were truly being ourselves.”
But taking a large pay cut wasn’t easy on the little family of four, and they found their savings depleting rather quickly. Clint told Waco Trib that there were many times when he doubted himself.
The Harps were living in a small apartment, and Clint was scouring construction sites and the backs of stores in search of disposed lumber to use as reclaimed wood.
Clint said, “I was basically going through their trash in my junky jeans and I thought, ‘What am I doing?’”
After a year of struggling, the Lord sovereignly sent the Gaines to them. As fate would have it, Clint Harp met Chip Gaines in a gas station parking lot. To say that the Harps were struggling financially at the time would be an understatement. The day they met Chip, Clint was unsure if they could afford to fill their car with gasoline.
The same day they met, Chip invited Clint to hang out with him. Together, the two talked for over three hours. The Gaines quickly became close friends with the Harps and ordered several pieces from them.
“One day, I was building things for her [Joanna] and she said, ‘Things are crazy right now. A guy contacted me to develop this show idea,’” Clint Harp shared. “Outwardly, I’m really cool. On the inside, ‘What? That’s insane!’ I’m going crazy.” Clint continued, “I met Chip at a gas station in February or March of 2012 and by October or November, we’re filming a pilot for HGTV.”
Thanks to their hard work coupled with the Gaines’ full support and encouragement, today the Harps’ little shop is doing quite well.
While many business owners often feel threatened or hesitant to promote other companies in their same line of work, Chip and Joanna are a different breed of entrepreneurs. Instead of fighting or competing for the spotlight, Chip and Joanna pave the way for other companies, and instead joyfully encourage everyone around them.
The Gaines are quick to give freely, because deep down, they recognize that they are simply stewards, serving a much higher purpose than just selling furniture on this side of eternity.
4. The Gaines believe that marriage is a sacred union, and their love for one another proves it.
“But every husband must love his wife as he loves himself, and wives should respect their husbands.” Ephesians 5:33
In a world full of divorce and heartbreak, Chip and Joanna paint a beautiful picture of God’s original plan for marriage.
It’s so clear to see the way Chip loves and cares for his gorgeous wifey, while the way Joanna respects and honors her husband is likewise just as evident.
Be honest, have you ever seen parents-of-four flirt this much — with each other (remember when Chip lovingly pranks Joanna, and she sheepishly responds, ‘Chip Gaines!’)? It’s a beautiful sight to behold, and almost too adorable. But not too cheesy, if you know what I mean. Rather, just the right amount of cheesiness.
Fun fact: Chip says that he knew Joanna was ‘the one’ from the very first moment he saw her in a photo.
Chip and Jojo have weekly date nights where business-talk is prohibited. Perhaps this is the secret to their undeniable love and devotion?
Joanna shared:“We really enjoy the problem solving, but there comes a point when we need to focus on us. We have the weekly date nights where we try our hardest not to talk business.”
Chip and Joanna are always looking for meaningful ways to show each other that they care. This past December, Chip decided to surprise Joanna with a beautiful brunch in celebration of their twelfth wedding anniversary.
Joanna was shocked to find Chip’s elaborate surprise.
The happy wifey shared, “My husband, Chip, never gets away with pulling off surprising me. Ever. He always puts in a valiant effort only for me to catch on and unintentionally squash his fun. For our twelfth anniversary, Chip wanted to change that once and for all, so he orchestrated this entire beautiful, thoughtful and well put-together surprise party. When asked if I was ‘actually surprised’ I simply point out my outfit (a t-shirt and jeans) to prove that I was most definitely surprised!
The setting was perfect — an unfinished barn on our farm, which happened to be right in the middle of being transformed into a garage and storage space. It was special because, though the space was unfinished, it was a perfect representation of the two of us and the work we love doing together: construction and renovating homes.
Chip had a local caterer and friend come in and curate a brunch menu of homemade biscuits and jam, frittatas, a parfait bar and fresh coffee and juices. “A close friend of mine took care of the table settings, opting to use mismatched flatware, chairs, dishes and linen napkins. The simple fresh flowers arrangements were made (with some help) by my kiddos, using various vases from my kitchen cupboard. The flowers themselves were actually picked from my garden, and supplemented with flowers and greenery from a local florist,” said Chip.
Joanna said, “Chip really did his research in finding out that the three symbols for a 12th anniversary are linen, silk and pearls. He wanted these symbols to really be represented in our celebration, so he had cards made explaining the symbols at each place setting, where each napkin was linen and each card was tied with silk string. To represent pearls, he surprised me with a beautiful pearl necklace made by the same jeweler who crafted my wedding ring on our engagement 13 years ago. It was such a special and meaningful gift.
The party itself was so intimate with just family and close friends in attendance. Chip stood up and read the sweetest speech and there was also live music played by a dear friend of ours. I tried to book him 12 years ago for our wedding, but he wasn’t available on our date, so it made this detail even more meaningful. He sang some of our favorite songs including the song I walked down the aisle to in our wedding. Everyone enjoyed the food, fellowship and music together. All the details and meaning behind this party really touched me, and when I think back to that sweet day Chip surprised me I feel so loved and honored to be his!”
Joanna took to Instagram to publicly thank her handsome hubby.
Mrs. Gaines wrote, “Happy Anniversary Chip! Thank you for the 12 good years of laughter, leadership, and adventure. No one makes me laugh harder than you do. You are strong and fearless yet kind and tender hearted. Thank you for teaching me to be brave and for loving me well.”
5. The Gaines aren’t fake, and don’t pretend to have it all together, but live to please God instead of man.
“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10
Joanna doesn’t spend five hours a day getting TV-ready, nor does Chip change into clean clothes for interviews on demo day. They simply don’t front for cameras. In fact, Joanna revealed that at first, Chip wasn’t a big fan of cameras.
Joanna shared, “He was scared of the camera at first where it was a real phobia. He would freeze up and then he would have to exit, and it would just be me.”
In a world obsessed with portraying a picture-perfect image and putting on a show, the Gaines strive to be authentic, real, and genuine. And as many Magnolia clients will attest, the Gaines are the same people in real-life, and on TV.
Kyle and Jaime Ferguson were featured on the “A Big Fix for a House in the Woods” episode, on season 3 of Fixer Upper, and were thrilled to find that the Gaines were just as kind and genuine as they’d hoped.
Jaime shared, “Chip is 100% a goofball. In fact he had us laughing the entire time to the point that it was all edited out. They must really have a hard time figuring out which funny thing to use in each episode because he doesn’t quit! … Gratitude is the word that comes to mind most when I think about our experience. I’m just so beyond grateful. The experience was wonderful and worth it.”
We just love the way the Gaines encourage us to trust God and enjoy whatever season we find ourselves in. They’re never too afraid to be silly, let loose, and have a little fun. The Gaines have a powerful way of reminding us be free in our own skin and simply live.
Thank you, Chip and Joanna, for giving America something positive to talk about. Your unashamed hope in Jesus Christ, and love for your family, and desire to bless everyone around you is a beautiful sight to behold. Thank you for your example.
“Whether you’re staying home and raising beautiful babies or you’re the CEO of a multi-million dollar company, let God speak into your life. Let His father heart come and say, ‘This is what I have for you.’ I think that’s the key – not believing the lies, fixing our eyes on Jesus, and walking in the truth.” – Joanna Gaines
