Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is known for his joyous facial expressions on AND off camera, but you don’t have to dig too far to find where that joy comes from: Johnson is outspoken about his faith in God.

Dwayne Douglas Johnson was born into a professional wrestling family on May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California. An only child, Johnson lived everywhere from New Zealand to Texas, because his father, Rocky Johnson, traveled frequently as a professional championship wrestler.

Like many of us, financial struggles plagued Johnson’s upbringing and created traumatic hardships for the family — but nothing could prepare Johnson for the pain he was about to endure next…

When Johnson was 15-years-old, he and his mother came home to an eviction notice and a lock on the door. They were living in a small studio in Honolulu, and their $180 weekly rent was too much for his mother, who worked cleaning hotel rooms. Broke and homeless, the pair had no choice but to move to Nashville, where his dad was wrestling at the time.

“It broke my heart. I remember saying to myself, ‘I will do anything and everything I possibly can to make sure we never get evicted again,’” Johnson said.

When I learned the tragedies Dwayne Johnson endured while growing up, I realized God was preparing him for greatness.

Shortly after moving to Nashville, and struggling with depression, Johnson’s mother tried to end her own life by walking into oncoming traffic. Had it not been for Johnson’s courage to run into the road and save her, she would not be here today. To this day, Dwayne Johnson credits the traumatic moment as one of his most defining chapters in his life.

“My heart stopped, horns were blowing and cars were swerving out of the way,” Johnson revealed. “In that moment, one of the greatest lessons I’ve ever learned was how precious life is and how in an instant it can all go away.”

By the age of 16, Dwayne Johnson had not only been arrested for everything from fighting and stealing to forging checks, but had also enrolled in four high schools across the country due to his frequent expulsions. As a high school student, Johnson found it very difficult to make friends due to his lofty size — he was 6’4 and weighed 225 at the time.

“When I was 16-years-old, that was the last time that I was arrested,” he said. “At that time, we were at an all-time low, I think, with our family.”

Johnson’s life changed forever when a high school coach caught him using the bathroom in the teacher’s lounge. This story really warmed my heart…

“A teacher comes in. His name is Jody Cwik. Tough guy. He says, ‘Hey. You can’t be in here,” Johnson recalled. “I kind of pause, look over my shoulder. ‘OK. I’ll leave when I’m done.’ And I continued to wash my hands. He was fuming.”

Johnson got home that evening and started regretting his act of defiance. He felt bad, so he found Cwik the next day at school and offered an apology.

“I said, ‘I just want to apologize for how I acted yesterday. And I’m sorry.’ And I stuck my hand out,” Johnson said. “He looked at my hand, looked at me, looked at my hand again. And he shook my hand. I’ll never forget that shake — he wouldn’t let it go.”

After receiving Johnson’s apology, Coach Cwik asked him to join the football team. As Johnson fell in love with football, many other areas of his life began to improve as well. Little did Johnson know then, God had sent him a miracle in the form of Coach Cwik.

“My grades got better, and I started getting recruited from every college across the country. My thought process started to change. That’s when I started thinking about goals and what I wanted to accomplish,” Johnson said.

Johnson’s journey to stardom was far from easy: he went on to to play college football at the University of Miami where he had great success until a back injury cost him a spot in the NFL at the age of 23. He then struggled with a deep depression until he decided to pursue a career in wrestling — even though everyone thought it was a horrible idea – he went on to become a championship wrestling icon.

When Johnson announced he was launching an acting career, many doubted his potential. But time and time again, Johnson’s devout faith in God equipped him with the courage and strength to pursue his true purpose.

“At that time, I was little unsure of what was actually gonna happen, you know, so I just have to, you know, put my faith in God and continue to work hard and hopefully good things will happen,” Johnson shared.

The 44-year-old superstar could easily let the fame get to his head at a time like this, but Dwayne Johnson knows where his true fortune can be found — in heaven.

Johnson’s devout faith in God keeps him grounded amidst the success. He remains true to his humble roots by always putting family first and serving others as a steward of God’s varied grace. Johnson isn’t just a proud supporter of our troops and police officers, he’s one of the few men in Hollywood in a loyal relationship, and a proud father to two beautiful girls – and raising them to have a strong faith in God too.

“I have my own special relationship with God, you know, and I certainly feel very blessed. I count my blessings every day,” Johnson revealed.

Johnson gives God all the glory by living life to the fullest: from waking up at 4:30 a.m. each day for his workout and treating his body as a temple, to frequently volunteering to help those in need in-between his outrageously busy filming schedule. Johnson realizes the challenges he endured molded him into the man of God he is today.

“I grew up where, when a door closed, a window didn’t open. The only thing I had was cracks. I’d do everything to get through those cracks – scratch, claw, bite, push, bleed. Now the opportunity is here. The door is wide open, and it’s as big as a garage,” Johnson said.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson now uses his faith to uplift and encourage his millions of fans. Johnson’s social media accounts are covered with inspiring pieces of his testimony, empowering words of wisdom, and glimpses of the life he’s built with a strong faith in God. It’s so refreshing to see a celebrity using their faith to influence the people around the world who are watching them. And it turns out, Johnson might even run for president someday.

“I’ll be honest, I haven’t ruled politics out. I can’t deny that the thought of being governor, the thought of being president, is alluring,” Johnson revealed.
