At just 26 years old, he’s the highest-paid player in NFL history. But Derek Carr isn’t like most famous football players– and his recent interview proves it.
Born on March 28, 1991, Derek Dallas Carr is an American football quarterback for the Oakland Raiders. After playing college football at Fresno State, Carr was drafted by the Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft.
But Carr isn’t your typical football star. In addition to being a proud family man, Derek Carr has never shied away from sharing about his faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The humble quarterback’s Instagram bio simply reads: “Christian, Husband, Father and Football Player.”
One of Carr’s most recent posts reads: “What they call work I call worship! Never ashamed of whose I am and who brought me here. Yahweh is faithful to those who walk WITH Him! He has given me so many blessings my cup overflows starting with my beautiful family and friends. Then way down the list I get to play football for my job. I just pray I remain faithful with this platform to do His work! Love and appreciate every single one of you. There is a treasure inside all of you! God bless and Go Raiders!”
You won’t come across any inappropriate, superficial, or flashy posts on Carr’s social media pages. Instead, the proud husband and father of two frequently shares about his faith and family.
Carr was an early MVP candidate last year, leading the Raiders to a 12-3 record while throwing for over 3,900 yards with 28 touchdowns and six interceptions, posting a 96.7 passer rating.
But a tragic injury changed everything when he broke his leg in Week 15 and missed the rest of the season. Yet even still, Carr kept the faith. He shared: “It doesn’t always make sense but I will never stop believing and I will never forget the One who brought me here!”
God answered Carr’s prayers and he was back in the game last season, ranking seventh among all quarterbacks, according to Football Outsiders’ metrics — ahead of Ben Roethlisberger, Matthew Stafford and Andrew Luck.
And for Carr, the blessings just keep on coming. Last week, the quarterback was offered a whopping $125 million contract with the Raiders. After signing the biggest contract in NFL history, Derek Carr seized the opportunity to give all glory to God.
Reporters bombarded Carr with inquiries about what he plans to do with the money. But instead of responding with cliche “yacht-type” answers, Carr shocked Americans when he revealed that he plans to give the money away.
Carr humbly told CBS Sports: “The first thing I’ll do is pay my tithe like I have since I was in college — giving $700 on a scholarship check. That won’t change. I’ll do that… The exciting thing for me money wise, honestly, is that this money is going to help a lot of people. I’m very thankful to have it, that it’s in our hands, because it’s going to help people, not only in this country, but a lot of countries around the world.”

Today, Derek Carr is using his NFL platform to share his faith. But it hasn’t always been that way. Carr recently shared that he used to be really good at faking his faith on Sunday mornings, while the rest of the week found him enjoying a lifestyle consumed with parties, drinking, and girls.
That was Carr’s life for the first two years of his college career, until a kind-hearted Christian girl wrote him a letter. Carr poignantly described the moment everything changed: “I think Christ really became real to me when my wife [who was just a friend at the time]…wrote me a letter, and it said, ‘You’re not the person that I thought you were.’”
The honest letter from his now-wife, Heather, was a turning point for Carr. The star quarterback reached out and asked those around him — even his college teammates — to hold him accountable. Carr confessed: “You guys know what I’ve been doing. I’m a Christian, and I haven’t been living it … I’m a Christian now, and I’ve asked God for his forgiveness. Now, watch how I live my lifestyle.”
In the subsequent months, it was evident that Christ was radically transforming Carr from the inside out. And it wasn’t long before Carr told his friends that Heather was the type of girl he wanted to marry — and that’s exactly what he did.
Shortly after tying the knot, the Carr’s faith was put to the ultimate test. The couple’s firstborn son, Dallas, fell critically ill just hours after birth. Medical staff soon discovered that Dallas’ intestines were twisted, cutting off the baby’s blood flow, a life-threatening complication known as “intestinal malrotation.” One doctor told Derek that his son might not make it.
Even still, the couple clung to their faith and watched in amazement as God answered prayer after prayer. The family spent 23 sleepless nights in the neonatal intensive care unit, and prayed countless prayers. Thankfully, little Dallas underwent three successful surgeries, and was given a clean bill of health.
To this day, the couple attributes their son’s miraculous recovery to prayers and the excellent care from the medical staff at Children’s Hospital Central California in Madera.
Heather told SBNation: “We had so many people praying for us. The whole community came together and prayed for us. It’s just amazing how many people came together in our time of need.”
Today, Derek and Heather Carr are still in awe of how far God has brought them.
Heather told SBNation: “It’s like I married a completely different guy. People think, ‘Can people really change?’ Derek’s a prime example that people can really change. It’s just amazing how far he’s come in life.”

While listening to Derek Carr’s inspiring story, I just couldn’t help but think of Proverbs 16:9 and 1 Peter 5:5-7, which read,
“A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps… Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.”
“That’s how I know He’s with me, because I have a peace and a joy. I can’t describe it, but I have it, and I know it’s real.” – Derek Carr
Derek Carr’s steadfast character and undeniable love for his family sets him apart, while his faith and trust in the Lord is indeed a beautiful sight to behold.
