It seems as though everything Chip and Joanna Gaines put their hands to turns into gold.
But just a few weeks after announcing their newest expansion to the Magnolia empire, the Gaines open up about the secret struggles which led to her great success — and the one person who carried them through it all.
It’s safe to say that America has fallen head-over-heels in love with the stars of HGTV’s hit show, “Fixer Upper”. And now, just days after the finale of Season 3 of the show, Chip and Jo have shared news that—in true Texas style—is bigger than ever.
Chip and Joanna Gaines have inspired countless hearts across the globe. And together, they’ve seemingly bridged the gap between people from all kinds of backgrounds, religions, and lifestyles.
It’s strange to think that just three years ago, hardly anyone had ever heard of the Gaines — or Waco, Texas for that matter. But today, their lives serve as living proof of the American dream — and just how mightily God can use one couple willing to surrender it all.
Dubbed “the Best Real-Life Couple on TV” by Vogue; America has watched in admiration as this dynamic duo redefines what wholesome, entertaining, and quality television looks like.
We love the way Joanna honors her husband and cares for their four adorable kiddos. The fact that she’s a classy, modest, and creative geinius only makes her that much more likable.
And we love the way Chip treasures his wife and is there for their children. We love the fact that he leads his family and is man enough to be his wife’s biggest supporter.
Not to mention: Chip and Joanna Gaines chemistry, over-all adorableness, and playful humor is a breath of fresh air.
Case and point: Watch them play “The Newlywed Game” in the video below.
Although Joanna has no formal interior design “background”, the dynamic duo has been flipping houses together since before they were engaged. In an exclusive interview with Glamour, the Gaines reveal that it didn’t take long for them to realize that God had brought them together for a divine purpose.
Joanna shared, “Chip was flipping houses while we were dating.”
Chip added, “When she started watching me do what I did, which was flip these investment properties, she got kind of curious and interested. I love what I do from a construction standpoint, but in regards to interior design and colors, forget it. I would lean on her—What color do we do this wall? How can we do this floor plan? So it didn’t take very long in our career for her to really evolve into a dominant reality in my business. Next thing you know we are years into this thing and the design part of the equation became noticeably different from our competition.”
Joanna officially joined Chip’s home-flipping business after they got married. And together with their family’s full support, they even remodeled their first “fixer upper” home for themselves.
The Lord has brought Joanna a long way; from working in an all-you-can-eat buffet, to marrying the man of her dreams and building an empire that glorifies God.
Joanna shared, “I was actually a communications major and had never done design. I had always had a dream to open up a boutique of some sort. I didn’t know what kind of boutique, but we found this little fixer upper building and tackled that project together in the first year of marriage, and that’s when Magnolia opened, our retail location. I sold a bunch of products that would go in the home.”
Joanna decided to open her own shop in 2003, bringing her ideas and eye for design back to her roots—Waco, Texas. But shortly after opening Magnolia Store for the first time, Joanna made the heartbreaking decision to close the successful little shop so that she could spend more time with her family. And just like that, Joanna trusted God’s plan and said goodbye to everything she’d worked so diligently to build, so that she could be at home with her beautiful babies.
Joanna shared, “I remember the last day, you know we’re closing the shop down and I’m crying because it’s the end of a dream. And I feel like I hear God say, very clearly, ‘Joanna, if you trust Me with your dreams, I’m going to take Magnolia further than you could’ve ever dreamed, so just trust Me.’ I remember hearing that and feeling completely peaceful about it, and I walked away.”
Joanna is so talented and beautiful, women across America were shocked to hear that the seemingly flawless Mrs. Gaines has struggled with insecurity.
Joanna revealed that early in life, she fell prey to the lies of deep insecurity and shame. In an exclusive and vulnerable video, Joanna opened up about her struggles, and how the Lord brought her through them.
Perhaps the most important thing about Chip and Joanna’s journey is that God taught them to trust Him with everything — and to make Him their everything. Ultimately, knowing God’s Word and remembering His goodness was what enabled them to trust His plan.
Joanna shared, “God taught me to study the Word and believe it, even when it hadn’t been fulfilled yet. I really had to cultivate a place of faith that I never had before. I had to trust Him as He would speak His promise to me. This trust brought peace, although my circumstance hadn’t yet reflected His promise. His Word doesn’t return void, and God was working in my heart to establish deeper levels of trust that I now look back on and am thankful for.”
Today, the Gaines attribute their unparalleled success to One Person — Jesus Christ. And in an exclusive interview with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, the parents of four (Drake, 10, Ella, 9, Duke, 7, and Emmie, 6,) unashamedly shared their Faith and decision to put God first in everything they do. The Gaines explained:
“Our family has made a commitment to put Christ first, a lifestyle our parents modeled for us very well. They showed us how to keep our marriage and family centered around God. As for “Fixer Upper”, we have been surprised at the impact of our faith through the show. We haven’t been overtly evangelical, but the rich feedback we have received on family and love all source from our faith. Jesus said the world would know His disciples by their love for one another, and we’ve glimpsed this in practice and strive for it every day.”
It’s simply amazing to watch as the Lord opens door after door for this humble couple hailing from the small town of Waco, Texas.
They’ve written a book (“The Magnolia Story“) and star on HGTV’s No. 1 show, “Fixer Upper“, but Chip and Joanna also manage several thriving companies. To this day, the Gaines stand and watch in amazement as God continues to bless and grow their work.
Read on to learn about the different avenues the Lord is using Chip and Joanna Gaines:
Magnolia Homes – After a few years and four children later, Chip’s experience in the construction business coupled with Joanna’s eye for design eventually merged into one company: Magnolia Homes. For the most part, Chip manages the building — but of course, he needs a little design help from his trusted partner and creative director, “Jojo.” Hand-in-hand, Chip and Joanna design, build, and renovate houses together.
Additionally, the power-couple has developed a brand new gated community full of beautiful, custom homes in Waco, Texas.
Magnolia Realty – Chip has over 15 years of experience in the real estate market. So in case you’re in need of a new home, the Gaines have got you covered! Magnolia Realty helps clients buy and sell homes throughout Central Texas.
Magnolia Market – Several years after closing her first home-decor store, Joanna felt led to reopen her little shop.
In 2014, Chip and Joanna acquired the ‘Silos’ property in Waco, Texas, and decided it was the perfect place to reopen Joanna’s store.
They immediately began to dream about what the unique property would be transformed into. Together, they fell in love with the idea that people would be able to travel to the Silos – not just for a retail shopping experience – but for a relaxing atmosphere full of unique, fun activities and opportunities for rest.
On October 30, 2015, Magnolia Market at the Silos opened and the Gaines’ God-sized vision finally became a reality. Today, people from all corners of the world travel to visit the one-of-a-kind storefront.
And there’s a little something for everyone at Magnolia Market at the Silos. Shopping, games, the garden, and even a bite to eat. The Market itself is staged and set up with one goal in mind: to inspire you to own the space you’re in.
Magnolia House – Is the newest addition to the Magnolia family; a farmhouse-styled Bed and Breakfast in a little historic town right outside of Waco: McGregor, Texas.
The Gaines had a big dream for the charming little white house on the corner.
Chip and Jo’s vision was that the beautiful little home would be the perfect, quiet place for out-of-town guests to stay after visiting Magnolia Market at the Silos.
The Magnolia House was first discovered by Chip and Joanna after showing it to a client in search of a house for Fixer Upper. When the couple didn’t choose it, Joanna pitched the idea of a vacation home to Chip – and he, always willing to take on a new challenge, agreed it was a great idea.
The Gaines purchased the little home and began construction immediately. And if the Magnolia House looks familiar, it might be because Joanna designed it to replicate their farmhouse, so that visitors “would always feel right at home.”
Magnolia Home Furniture – Launched in March of 2016, the unique furniture line was designed exclusively by Joanna to convey her fresh, unique design style that embodies her lifestyle of home and family. The beautiful line features an array of differing styles from “boho” to “farmhouse” and “french inspired”.
Joanna shared, “Home is the most important place. My passion is to help people create beautiful and meaningful spaces in their home. This isn’t about designing furniture, this is about creating timeless pieces that help tell your home story.”
Magnolia Paint Collection– Launched in April of 2016, Joanna made all of our magical dreams come true when she hand-picked her favorite colors and made them available for the rest of us.
Joanna shared, “Paint is one of the easiest ways to transform a space and change its overall look and feel. Our friends, family and supporters are always asking for advice on how to select the perfect paint color. And as I’ve worked with clients over the past twelve years, I’ve learned that committing to a paint color is a big fear for a lot of people. It really is a big commitment, and there are so many options out there that the process of choosing can be overwhelming. I was inspired to make the process simpler and less stressful by developing this paint with KILZ and choosing paint colors that will seamlessly blend with all personal style aesthetics.”
The vision behind Magnolia Flour is that visitors would be able to feel Joanna’s love of baking, and experience her classic, fresh and unexpected style in the form of pastries, breads and sweets.
Joanna shared, “From a young age I loved spending time in the kitchen with my family, and dreamed of owning my own bakery. This dream will come alive at the Silos, and I can’t wait to share it with you.
The vision behind Magnolia Flour is that you feel my family’s love for baking and experience an unexpected grouping of fresh baked pastries, breads and sweets. We will be open this Spring and can’t wait for you to see it when you visit the silos!”
Magnolia Café? – It was confirmed last week that Chip and Joanna have purchased Elite Café in Waco, Texas. However, what exactly the dynamic duo plans to do with the property remains unknown.
Formerly known for its yeast rolls and Eggs Benedict, the café was at one point a popular pitstop for travelers along I-35, and even served Elvis Presley a time or two. Waco’s landmark restaraunt closed in February after 97 years in business.
Whatever the Gaines have up their sleeves, we’re certain that it’s bound to be pretty great.
The Gaines’ spokesperson, Brock Murphy, confirmed the couple’s new acquisition rumors: “We have purchased the property. Whatever we do with the property will happen in 2017. We’re excited about what we’re going to do with it.”
And now, just days after the Season 3 finale of Fixer Upper, Chip and Jo have released shocking news that is changing the game for every fan of the empire.
Joanna took to Instagram to share the exciting news that honestly, sounds almost too good to be true!
“With season 3 over, and a ways to go until season 4, I thought it would be fun to host a monthly giveaway where I can redesign a living room or bedroom in your home from right here in Waco, TX!” wrote Joanna.
The lucky winner will have a whole host of surprises headed their way including: a custom style plan, $1000 to Magnolia Market, a rug, paint, and a piece of furniture from Joanna’s lines that she will personally select to fit in the winner’s space!

As if we needed any more reason to love Chip and Jo, they go and show off their generosity like never before! Where do I sign up to get in on the action?!
In a world full of greed, vanity, and pride, the Gaines are a bright-shining beacon of hope as Christ’s selfless love powerfully radiates through them. Because of Chip and Joanna’s faithfulness, time and time again, everyone around them is blessed.
To honor the Gaines and thank them for all they’ve done for their community in Waco, Texas, last Friday was dubbed “Fixer Upper Night” at their alma mater’s (Baylor University) baseball game. As an added bonus, Chip, Joanna, and their four adorable little kiddos threw the ceremonial first pitch.
Baylor coach Steve Rodriguez shared, “Chip and Jo, what an amazing testament to what they’ve done here, being able to come out and throw a first pitch for us. When you drive by that place (Magnolia Market) and you see the lines of people from literally all over the country, just wanting to see it and be a part of it, says something about who they are. It says something about the simplicity about what they do, but yet at the same time having so many people fascinated with it with regards to who they are.”
While I was listening to the Gaines’ powerful story, I just couldn’t help but think of Ephesians 3:14-21, which reads:
“My response is to get down on my knees before the Father, this magnificent Father who parcels out all heaven and earth…
And I ask Him that, with both feet firmly planted on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.
God can do anything, you know — far more than you could ever imagine, or guess, or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around, but by working within us, His Spirit deeply and gently within us.”
Amidst a world of broken marriages, workaholics, and countless families torn at the seams; Chip and Joanna aim to keep God at the center of their marriage, family, and work. And it’s just a beautiful thing to see what God’s done with their lives.
“Whether you’re staying home and raising beautiful babies or you’re the CEO of a multi-million dollar company, let God speak into your life. Let His father heart come and say, ‘This is what I have for you.’ I think that’s the key – not believing the lies, fixing our eyes on Jesus, and walking in the truth.” – Joanna Gaines
It’s no wonder why Chip and Joanna Gaines have inspired countless of lives across the country. Their lives are a testimony of God’s powerful love and unmistakable goodness. Thank you both, for reminding America what is truly admirable. And thank you, HGTV, for promoting such a wholesome TV show! The world needs more couples like Chip and Joanna Gaines, please share if you agree!
