Wedding vows are a sacred thing and are not to be taken lightly. One man, married to his wife for 18 years, held up his end of his vows. But what he did to his wife will make you question if he really meant what he said.
“I take thee to be my wedded husband/wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health…”
Often times, people say those words not thinking any of the bad could happen to them. But we live in a broken world and anything can happen that changes everything.
Jon Newman loved his wife, Marci, he really did, but when things took a turn for the worst, his true colors were revealed. Marci was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and in time spread to her lymph nodes and trachea.
This diagnosis led to hundreds of doctors appointments and lots of difficult conversations. Not only did the couple have to talk about how their lives would change, they had to think about their daughter, Mackenna.
Mackenna had always looked up to her parents, but when her mom got sick things really changed. Her dad went above and beyond to serve his wife well during their hard time.
As Marci went through radiation, Jon couldn’t be physically close with his wife for certain periods of time. One day while she was in treatment at their home, Mackenna snapped a photo of her dad.
If Jon couldn’t be right next to Marci, holding her hand, he was as close as he could get to let her know he was there for her. Jon so desperately wanted to support his wife, he even set up camp right outside the bedroom door and talked to Marci through the crack.
Marci shares, “Jon goes to every doctor’s appointment, every blood test, every surgery, every radiation. And, as you can see, if he can’t be by my side he is as close as he can get!”
Jon didn’t only hold true to his vows and honor his wife, he was able to show his daughter what marriage is all about.
“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lords holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ” Ephesians 3:17-18
Marci never had to wonder if she was loved and she never felt alone. Jon is an incredible example of what a Godly husband looks like. Sacrificing time and energy, putting his wife before himself and even his daughter, and loving unconditionally.
Thank you Jon for loving your wife well and showing us all what it means to love and serve others well. Please share this incredible story!
