The video of Grace VanderWaal’s breathtaking audition has already gone viral, but it’s what happened off camera that’s shocking the world even more.
It’s been 14 years since American Idol debuted, giving Americans their first experience with entertaining auditions. Since then, we’ve encountered infinite captivating performances: some that made us laugh, cry, and even cringe.
However, Grace VanderWaal’s audition for America’s Got Talent gave every one an experience we haven’t felt in more than a decade. A feeling that hasn’t been felt since we watched Kelly Clarkson’s audition in 2002.
What was that mysterious feeling we’ve been deprived of for far too long? It’s that moment when a star is born — leaving you hypnotized and grateful to experience such a blessing.
Grace VanderWaal seemed shy when she first stepped onto the audition stage for America’s Got Talent. When Grace revealed she would be performing an original song, the judges faces were instantly covered with doubt.
Although Grace has been writing songs since she was a toddler, the NBC competition marked the first time she would be singing in front of such a large crowd. “I’m doing my own song tonight, because I think that shows who I am,” she said, adding nervously, “I hope it does.”
When Simon Cowell asked Grace if she could win, the 12-year-old responded, “Miracles can happen, so possibly.” And then with the help of an ukulele, the aspiring star shined with her artistry. At the end, Grace received a rare standing ovation from the entire room, including Simon Cowell! And that’s not even the best part…
Howie Mandel was so impressed that he didn’t hesitate to send her through to the show’s live performance round by hitting the show’s Golden Buzzer. Each of the four judges can only hit the coveted button once, and on the second episode of auditions, Howie went for it.
“This is a show about surprises and you used the word ‘miracle,’ and I think you are a living, beautiful, walking miracle. I think the world is going to know your name,” Howie told Grace.
Right after Howie hit the buzzer, confetti shot out and Grace’s family came out on stage, shedding infinite tears. Amid all the excitement, Simon even said, “Grace, you know what I predict for you? I think you are the next Taylor Swift.” But I’m convinced God has an even more extraordinary plan for Grace VanderWaal.
“What a great girl, what a great personality. I 100% think we’ve got a star — I really do. This girl is special,” Simon said.
But Grace VanderWaal’s audition was more than impressive — it was an iconic moment that will go down in reality TV history. It’s easy to say her flawless talent is what swept everyone off their feet, but honestly, it was MUCH deeper than that.
Here’s 3 Reasons Why Grace VanderWaal’s Audition Was The Best One EVER:
#1: She brought the definition of “humble” to life…
“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” – Matthew 23:13
Despite the fact that she’s 12-years-old, and performed a song she wrote herself while playing the ukulele on stage in front of millions of strangers, Grace’s humble personality charmed us even more than her incredible talent. She reminded everyone the importance of modesty and gratitude.
Everyone was instantly hypnotized by her humility, and even more so after her precious reaction to the standing ovation she received – she was vividly shocked and grateful. Until her AGT audition, Grace’s friends never even knew about her legendary gift of music — she’s always been humble and not boastful.
“Humble” is an extremely rare and priceless character trait, especially nowadays due to our self-righteous society. But Grace restored our hope in humanity with her modesty and gratitude. Humility is a vital virtue we must all conquer in life, and this 12-year-old reminded us of its priceless value.
#2: She taught us that family is irreplaceable…
“So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” – 1 Corinthians 13:13
Right before Grace’s audition, she revealed that her older sister is her “best friend.” It’s clear that Grace comes from a tight-knit, loving family. Our hearts melted as we saw her sister, mother, and father watching their precious Grace audition from backstage. There they all were, not only supporting Grace’s dream — but also supporting each other.
No matter how many times I’ve watched Grace’s audition, my eyes keep filling with tears as I watch her family’s unity and pride. And I cried even harder as I watched Grace’s sister rush to the stage to hug her as the confetti fell after Howie awarded her the Golden Buzzer. Even Howie was touched by the family’s celebration of Grace’s audition, and he couldn’t resist running onstage to congratulate them.
With divorce rates on the rise and a million families shattered these days, Grace’s family was a breath of fresh air. Family is ESSENTIAL to a quality life, and Grace’s audition is proof.
#3: She reminded us that miracles really do exist…
“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” – Isaiah 40:31
With all the negative news surrounding us these days, it’s easy to lose hope in miracles. But all it took was a 12-year-old girl with an incredible gift and a humble personality to remind us that miracles aren’t something we only see in movies — they happen in real life too, you just have to believe.
Grace believes in miracles, and her decision to sing an original song is proof. When she posted on Twitter that her song “I Don’t Know My Name” was actually her backup song, I was shocked to the core. Good thing she sang that song — every one has it stuck in their heads now!

Howie said it perfectly. Grace VanderWaal truly is “a living, beautiful, walking miracle.” Although her audition was the best we’ve ever encountered in the world of reality competitions, critics are already doubting Grace’s potential, claiming that “talent competitions rarely produce bona fide superstars with shelf lives that last beyond their respective shows.” However, Grace VanderWaal could very well break that mold — especially if we keep her in our prayers.
Grace’s legendary talent is one of the most beautiful gifts I’ve ever seen God bless anyone with – and I’m so thankful she’s brave enough to share it with the world at such a young age!
Please keep Grace in your prayers as she continues competing. There’s no doubt she’s a star on the rise!
