Summer is right around the corner and soon everyone will be out by the pool enjoying the beautiful weather. But every summer we all face the same problem: a never-ending attack from various bugs.
An easy solution would be to use bug spray, and while nothing else out there really beats a nice spray down, many people do not want to have to lather up the bug spray every time they walk outside. The good news is there are many things you can do to keep the bugs away without the help of numerous chemicals.
One way to avoid the bugs is to make sure your backyard does not look so enticing to these insects.
For example, mosquitoes actually lay their eggs in calm, standing water. By simply doing away with the standing water that accumulates in different parts of your yard, you will remove a large amount of the problem.
When dealing with those pesky flies and annoying ants, try moving your trash and recycling bins as far away as you possibly can from your house.
Of course, it’s no surprise that flies love garbage, so by moving the trash away and ensuring the lid is on securely, the flies should be much less of a bother while relaxing in your yard. The ants on the other hand, are attracted to the sugary remains that are left inside of your recyclables. By moving the recycling as well, ants are then lured away from the house and, ultimately, you!
When these simple steps are not enough to get rid of your insect problem, it may take a bit more work, but the end result is completely worth it. Things such as bug-repelling essential oils in candles or torches have been known to work incredibly. But these too have their drawbacks, only being effective up to about five feet.
Other tricks include different do-it-yourself traps to catch these insects. One great example of this was shared on Facebook by Renee Furman,
“For all of you that msg me for these 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/2 cup warm water, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt.” Put all of these ingredients together in a container, place it outside on your patio or by the pool and watch the wasps and yellow jackets disappear from your yard and into the jar.
There are hundreds of different DIY ideas to keep bugs away this summer without the use of bug spray. Not only are they effective, they are extremely affordable.
