Mike Fisher married country diva Carrie Underwood a few years ago, but it wasn’t just his good looks that attracted the American Idol alumna, but rather his heart.
Now the pair has a family of their own, including a son, Isaiah and they’re taking the nation by storm through their power careers, shared authenticity, and mutual charm. But things haven’t always been so sweet.
Recently Mike sat down and went on record to describe a past we had no idea about and how faith has impacted his life.
Born into a Christian family and accepting Jesus at 6 years old, Fisher quickly rose to the top of his game in professional hockey, joining the Canadian Hockey league at the age of 17.
After playing hockey for several years, Fisher describes how on the outside he was following all the rules and living like a “good Christian”, but inside his life was a mess.
Until one day, he had enough and sat down to have a bible study with his cousin. He opened the bible and Luke 9:23-25 forever changed his life.
“That [scripture] was for me,” said Fisher. “Because I had reached my dreams; I had money and everything I thought was cool and it just wasn’t working. And I knew the answer, but I hadn’t been looking for it in the right places. Through a process of just praying and getting in the word with my cousin, my life was changed. For the first time I remember thinking, this is really real. It wasn’t because of my parents. It wasn’t because I was supposed to be in Church. But it became real to me and it didn’t happen overnight, but slowly God changed me on the inside.”
“It wasn’t religion anymore. It was a real relationship. And it was awesome. I finally figured out that it wasn’t about just performing. It’s about just accepting His love. In spite of our failures and mistakes, the love of the Father is unconditional.
Watch Mike’s whole story here in the I Am Second white chair interview:
Mike and Carrie have a shared love for Christ and it’s one of the foundations of not just their marriage, but how they raise their son.
“[We want Isaiah to] have a loving heart toward people who are different,” said Carrie. “Mike and I talk about teaching him how to approach everybody in a loving way, even if they’re not the same, and to try to say, ‘You know what? God loves them, so it should be my job to do my best to love them as well.’ “
Not only to Carrie and Mike want to instill a love for God in their son’s heart, but also a love for God’s people — the Church community.
“We want to go to church, not just for lessons and learning, but also to have a community and be surrounded by people who are just trying to raise their kids up good. Keeping everything as loving as possible, you know?” said Underwood.
Mike Fisher is a great example of a godly husband and father and it takes a constant reliance on the grace of God to keep us from falling and redeem us from ourselves. Thankfully, Mike surrendered to the change that God did inside of him and our world is forever changed by his and his wife’s lives.
