The theme of the first day at the Republican National Convention was “Make America Safe Again,” and to go along with the theme the party picked a list of guests willing to speak the truth on what we as a nation need.
With all that has happened lately in our country with the targeting of police officers, Trump’s campaign found it appropriate to bring Sheriff David Clarke to speak in Cleveland.
For those of you who may not know, Sheriff Clarke has gotten a lot of recognition over the last few years for calling out the president for his divisive rhetoric in regards to police officers. In several instances Clarke has said Obama’s comments have only made tensions worse between cops and the communities they serve.
“This anti-police rhetoric sweeping the country has turned out some hateful things inside of people that are now playing themselves out on the American police officer.”
At the Republican National Convention, Clarke opened the night off with a statement that had the entire arena on their feet, cheering in support:
“Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to make something very clear, ‘Blue Lives Matter in America.'”
This comes just days after another tragic cop murder, this time in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where three cops were ambushed, and killed. Clarke said that we can’t be great again if we can’t have security in our own towns:
“We simply cannot be great if we do not feel safe in our homes, on our streets, in our schools.
I see this every day at street level where many Americans increasingly have an uneasiness about the ability of their families to live safely in these troubling times.
This transcends race, religion, ethnicity, gender, age and lifestyle.”
Sheriff Clarke is absolutely correct in his speech. We need to value the police officers who keep us safe, and put their lives on the line every single day. How can we ever aspire to be a better nation if we treat our civil servants with such blatant disrespect? How can our police officers do their jobs when they are worried about ambush attacks?
Clarke was also very adamant about the negative impact on society the “Black Lives Matter” movement has had since its inception years ago. He says that the actions of the protestors endanger everyone, and only make matters worse:
“So many of the actions of the Occupy movement and Black Lives Matter transcend peaceful protest and violates the code of conduct we rely on. I call it anarchy.”
Clarke then pivoted and began to talk about what made Donald Trump fit to be Commander-in-Chief during these difficult times facing the United States:
“Donald Trump understands the only way that we can make our nation safe again is to recommit to a system of justice in which no government official, not even those who have fought their way to the marble and granite halls of Washington; no private citizen, no elected official, even Hillary Clinton; no group of people, despite the fervor with which they put forward their argument; can claim privilege above the law.”
Is Sheriff Clarke suggesting that Donald Trump would FINALLY bring charges against the Clintons, if elected? That remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, Trump has won over the support of arguably America’s most influential law enforcement officers.
In a time when it seems police lives are constantly at risk, we need a leader who will BACK THE BLUE.
